Your Personal 2020 Vision of Health

100 Year Lifestyle Leave a Comment

Happy New Year and here’s to you accomplishing your personal 2020 vision, especially as it relates to your health. You deserve it!

For many people, making healthier choices can make the difference between a successful, happy year and a challenging one. Our office is ready to help you make your health a priority so this is your best year ever!

Starting with the principle that health comes from within, making healthier choices that are aligned with your body functioning at its highest level, increasing your resistance naturally and providing yourself with good nutrition and fitness can make all the difference!

The health of your spine and your nervous system must be your number one priority! Your nervous system includes your brain, spinal cord and the 45 miles of nerves that go to every cell, tissue, and organ in your body. This includes your special senses, your gut, your muscles, heart, lungs, liver, kidneys, stomach, skin and every other cell – all quadrillions of them!

The Lifestyle Care Continuum – Crisis Care to Lifestyle Care

Crisis Care

If you really want to make lasting changes to your health, you’ve got to stop living from crisis to crisis. “If it ain’t broke don’t fix it” was the motto of many elders who defined broke as serious, life-threatening disease or severe excruciating pain. They used the personal crisis as their primary motivator to action.

This mindset and strategy can lead to a lifetime of suffering and deterioration as individuals age and these issues become chronic. Don’t wait for this inevitable reality to permanently hinder your life. Act now and let 2020 be the year you make Critical Transition to Lifestyle Care.

Children in Crisis

Birth trauma, spectrum challenges, food, and environmental sensitivities can make a child and parent’s life more challenging. Addressing the neurological component of these issues with chiropractic care is vital to immediate and long-term solutions and your child reaching their potential in life.

The Critical Transition

Crisis Care gives relief and hope as it takes the edge off a health problem. The Critical Transition gets will get you off the roller coaster. Stay committed to your care and healthier lifestyle, regardless of how you feel so your body can change.

Keeping your spine, brain and nervous system healthy enables your body to adapt in a healthy way and change for the better. Kids usually don’t require this phase of care because their conditions, subluxations, are not as chronic. If there has been birth trauma, the longer you wait (this includes adults) the more care that will likely be required.

Lifestyle Care

The intensity of your Lifestyle Care will depend on the intensity of your lifestyle and the underlying condition of your spine and nervous system. Keeping your brain, spine and nervous system healthy as a part of your lifestyle will keep you engaged in life and enable you to perform at higher levels in all areas including work, parenting, athletics and more.

Ask us what this specifically means for you and for your family members.

Primary Care

Millions of individuals and families are utilizing chiropractic care as one of their primary resources. It is holistic, drug-free and helps keep your body balanced and functioning better.

The longevity factor is becoming a reality for more people as they see their family members getting older before their very eyes. They are realizing they have to live differently if they don’t want to be a burden or suffer as they age.

Follow the path of the Lifestyle Care Continuum. Make these 100 Year Lifestyle choices today and as a result, you will more likely enjoy a sensational century.

Tingling Back and Leg Pain? Help! I have Sciatica!

anna

By Bellevue Chiropractor, Dr. Bob Cummins
Bellevue – Pain radiating from the low back, into the buttock, back of the thigh, into the calf and foot is often referred to as “Sciatica”.   Nerves exiting the lumbar spine form a large nerve bundle that exits at the low back of the pelvis on each side at the sciatic notch.  This nerve bundle, called the sciatic nerve, weaves its way through the hamstring muscles and travels past the knee, through the calf, through the foot, and eventually to the toes.  The nerve is like a large branch on a tree.  The nerve bundle  has many off shoots that go in different directions down the leg.
Chronic sciatic symptoms are usually associated with serious wear and tear damage in the lumbar spine:  degenerative disc disease, disc bulges, facet arthritis, and fatty infiltration of the stabilizing muscle structures.
Maintaining the nerve communication pathway from the brain, down the spinal cord, over the sciatic nerve, to all the tissue cells of the leg is vital for health.  Shooting pain is only one effect of this disorder. In my clinical practice, I frequently see hip, knee, and foot problems associated with this issue.
Structural integrity of the spine and nervous system is usually only given even a second thought after painful episodes.   Would you care for your teeth this way?  Keep your spine and nervous system healthy by following a simple method.  Have great nutrition; develop strategies to handle the stress of life; incorporate strengthening, stretching, and endurance type of exercise for your body; and last, get your spine tuned by a chiropractor on a periodic basis.

Why Does the Back Pain Keep Coming Back?

anna

By Bellevue Chiropractor: Dr. Bob Cummins

Bellevue – Often patients ask, “Why is my back so tight?” and  “Why does the back problem keep coming back”.   These “Problems” are usually abnormally aligned or moving spinal segments that are irritating surrounding nerves, muscles, and ligaments.  Chiropractors call them , ” vertebral subluxations.”  Bones don’t have a mind of their own.  They can’t misalign whenever they feel like it.  Muscle tension controls bone position, and the nervous system controls muscle tension.  At the end of the day, the nervous system is the culprit behind why the problem keeps coming back and why the tension is always in the same place.

What causes the nervous system to create this situation?  Stress.  Chemical stress, physical stress, and psychological stress.  When you experience more stress than the body can efficiently adapt to, the body assumes to one degree or another, a fight or flight condition which causes muscles to contract and alter bony alignment and motion.  This creates the problem you end up feeling as pain, tightness, immobility, your back feeling stuck or hurt.

What can you do it about it on your own?  Eat really well and avoid chemical toxins in the environment.  Maintain good sleep habits.  Develop strategies to manage mental stress.  Work exercise into your routine that includes strength, endurance, and  flexibility.

Think, a healthy breakfast at the Bellevue Whole Foods, a long walk during your lunch break from T-Mobile down to the Factoria Starbucks to grab a fresh pressed juice, and heading to Crossfit Bellevue after work for good friends and a great workout.

If you adopt this lifestyle, you will have less recurrent back tension, and those problems to your back will come back less and less.

The Truth of the Seattle Times "Dissenting View of the Paleo Diet"

anna

Bellevue – After reading “A dissenting view on the Paleo Diet” by Kristal Lowe, RD, published Sunday, July 20, 2014 in the Seattle Times, as your Bellevue chiropractor,  my thoughts merrit a brief response:
The paleo diet is based on eating a similar diet to our ancestors that lived before the agricultural revolution 10,000 years ago.  This diet is based on vegetables, fruit, nuts, seeds, and high quality unprocessed meats.   The premise is that our bodies were designed for this environment and have not had enough time through the evolutionary process to adapt to the dramatic changes in food over the last 10,000 years, and especially in the last 100 years.
I disagree with several points of the Seattle Times article, the primary is its criticism stating that the diet lacks substantial fiber and carbohydrates.   The paleo diet, although heavy in animal proteins and fats, is vegetable based.  Vegetables are generally characterized by their high fiber content.  Although some vegetables are not large contributors of digestible carbohydrate, there are excellent sources of carbohydrate starches that are available.  The go to food item in the paleo diet is the sweet potato.
If decreasing systemic inflammation and reducing the high blood sugar levels associated with cancer, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease is important to you, seriously consider the paleo diet.  In my opinion, the pros outweigh the cons.

Children, Families and Chiropractic Check Ups

anna

Bellevue- Recent research has shown that chiropractic care is extremely safe for babies and children. As a result, more children and families are having their spine and nervous system examined by those like Bellevue Chiropractor, Dr. Bob Cummins.
The Journal of Science and Healing reported on a study of 577 children under the age of 18 receiving chiropractic care.  The study showed that parents reported a high rate of improvement in their children presenting with health issues with the most common symptoms of muscular conditions, ear, nose, throat, respiratory and digestive issues. They also reported better sleeping patterns, improvements in behavior, and stronger immune systems while under chiropractic care.
“This study is exciting and l feel warrants further study.  At Cummins Chiropractic and Wellness, we have seen a similar result with children under chiropractic care having positive results,” said Dr. Bob Cummins, Bellevue chiropractor.
While there are many conditions that respond to chiropractic care as indicated in this research, chiropractic care does not treat these conditions. The conditions respond because of the increase in the body’s ability to fight infection, resist dis-ease and heal itself when the spine is aligned and the nerves are working properly.
At the same time many parents who used to give prescription and over the counter drugs routinely to their children are stopping to think twice before doing it again. Why? Here are a few reasons to consider.
Children’s bodies process medication differently than do adults. During debate and discussion about off-label prescribing, which is the practice of prescribing medications to children and extrapolating from an adult does to a pediatric dose, The Director of the Food and Drug Administration’s Office of Pediatric Therapeutics stated, “We found out that you can’t predict how kids are going to handle things.”
The Government Accountability Office concludes that only about one-third of the drugs prescribed have been studied and labeled for pediatric use. This is a very dangerous practice.
According to a CDC Report in November 2013, “Every year as many as 10 million U.S. children risk side effects from antibiotic prescriptions that are unlikely to help their upper respiratory conditions. Many people have a misconception that, since antibiotics are commonly used, they are harmless. Taking antibiotics when you have virus can do more harm than good.”
The families that are choosing chiropractic care and opting for alternatives to medication as a first response to symptoms and conditions are enjoying both short term and long term perks of their positive choices. Regardless of who in the family is seeking relief from conditions, everyone in the family benefits from improved immune systems, better digestion and restful nights. Lifestyle Care can make a huge difference.
Our Bellevue office offers Chiropractic Care to people of all ages and sizes including infants and children. We are trained to provide you and your family with great, quality care. The adjustments are specific to the individual. The adjustments given to a newborn are not the same as the ones given to a 4 year old sibling. The adjustment for a 12 year old will differ from the ones the parents just received during their visit.
Everyone in your family could benefit from a chiropractic check-up. Through your examination, we will determine if you are a candidate for care and if your spine and nervous system has been compromised. Contact us today to schedule your appointment.

Vital Vacation Tips to Get out of Bellevue

anna

Summer Time is vacation time for many of us. The kids are out of school at Somerset, Tyee and Newport and family trips are planned to the Olympic Penninsula, Chelan, California and Europe! In the world of your Bellevue 100 Year Lifestyle Chiropractic office, we call vacations Play Time.
Play Time has many benefits and may help prevent forced time off that is caused by a health crisis like your back going out or having migraine headaches. When someone makes the transition from Crisis Care to Lifestyle Care with their chiropractic adjustments, they often experience higher levels of health. The same is true with people who plan for and build vacations into their lifestyle.
Here’s why…
Vacations may help you live longer – A study by the State University of New York at Oswego that surveyed 12,000 men between ages 35 and 57, found that men who go on vacation every year reduce their overall risk of death by 20%.
The Framington Heart Study indicates women who regularly take time off have a 50% lower risk for heart attack.
Vacations can raise energy levels – Experts from the University of Pittsburgh and Radboud University both said that people had more energy and felt more satisfied with life while on vacation.
Vacations free your mind – Robert Kriegel, author of “How To Succeed In Business…” believes many workers get their best ideas  away from work and Los Angeles psychologist, Robert Butterworth told ABC, “The break will allow you to refresh your brain cells.”
Vacations can strengthen relationships – A Wisconsin Medical Journal published findings that women who take two or more vacations a year are less likely to be depressed, tired, or unhappy with their marital relationship.
If you believe you can’t take a vacation and there is too much at stake, in one way, you are right.  There is too much at stake: The toll on your long term vitality, health and energy. Not taking Play Time can cause a buildup of stress that is unhealthy and can lead to all types of health problems.
Stress affects everyone differently. High levels of stress can contribute to heart disease, cancer, digestive issues and sleep deprivation. Stress can elevate cortisol levels and reduce the strength of your immune system.  These are just a few conditions from a long list that can slowly sneak up on you over time or dramatically surprise you with the speed of their impact on your life.
If you use up all your sick days then have to dip into your vacation days, where is the win? You have the choice. Plan and take your vacation.
Leading up to your vacation, make sure you schedule your spinal checkups to determine if you need to get adjusted. Going on a vacation with a healthy spine and nervous system can make your trip more enjoyable while also improving your health and well-being.
Go ahead, adjust your lifestyle and take some time away from Seattle and Bellevue. You will be glad you did.
