Young Hunchbacks?

For all the benefits technology has brought our world,  its consequences are starting to catch up with our health and they are presenting us with serious problems.  From utilizing computers for work, using television and video games as entertainment, and of course, staring at our ‘smart phone’ for hours reading, working on the go or scrolling through social media, the effects are adding up. Recently, more and more children, teenagers and young adults are developing hunchbacks due to the poor posture associated with constant use of cell phones and other devices with screens. It’s even become common in parents, the middle-aged and the aging populations. We used to associate bad posture, slouching shoulders and a hunchback as a sign of old age or a symbol of depression, weakness and an inferiority complex. Now, even the strong-willed, the leaders and the empowered are developing hunchbacks while they are young.

Your Neck Pays the Price

No matter what piece of technology you use, your neck and nerves may be paying the ultimate price. For every inch you look down at your phone, the weight of your head increases by roughly 10 pounds. Multiply these by several hours a day, 7 days a week for months on end and what happens? This forward head translation places an enormous amount of stress on spinal bones, nerves and the muscles that control your head movement. It is not a coincidence that headaches and neck pain are increasingly being seen by chiropractors and other healthcare providers. Because your body is amazingly adaptable, the hunchback is your body’s method of adapting and coping with the stress that looking down on your phone places on your neck and spine. This body position can reverse the curvature of your neck and place additional stress on the entire spine and nervous system causing all types of health problems and accelerating spinal and nerve degeneration, interfering with your health on many levels both today and as you age.

The nervous system is the master controller of your entire body, and it is imperative to make sure that it is healthy. Much like a cell phone requires a tower signal in order to send and receive calls and messages, your nervous system is your body’s natural IT system that is responsible for sending electrical signals to and from your brain so you can move, breathe, talk, and perform all of your favorite activities. Local Healthy Fun #OlympicDay 2017

This is why world champion rower Dr. Bob Cummins and his wife, Olympic champion rower Anna Cummins are supporting the 2017 celebrations of Olympic Day.  Join their passion for healthy spines, bodies and minds by attending one of the local Olympic Day events in and around Bellevue:

Saturday, June 17th at Lake Stevens Rowing:  Try Rowing Experience from 10am – 1pm or Try Stand Up Paddle Board and Paddle Board Yoga from 2-3:30pm. Lake Stevens Rowing Club  1801 123rd Dr NE, Lake Stevens, WA 98258.
Saturday, June 24th at the Coal Creek YMCA:  10:30am-12:30pm  13750 Newcastle Golf Club Rd, Newcastle, WA 98059.  Try Rowing Experience with the Renton Rowing Club and an Olympic themed kids obstacle course and ice cream social by the  Coal Creek Family YMCA.
These Olympic Day activities are two of more than 2,000 events taking place nationwide during the month of June. The events, designed to engage youth and promote the ideals of the Olympic movement, feature athlete appearances, family-friendly activities and interactive learning experiences. Around the world, more than 160 countries take part in the annual celebration. Olympic Day, created in 1948 to commemorate the birth of the modern Olympic Games. In the U.S., Olympic Day events range from small gatherings to large, city-wide events.

How Today's Pain Becomes Tomorrows…

If you carried a kid on your shoulders for a few miles and had a headache after - is that a bad thing?  Not really.  Pain is our body talking to us to let us know it's not happy.  Instead of popping an Advil, how about all natural, drug and surgery free chiropractic?  Pictured: Dr. Cummins with daughters at King County Park's Cougar Mountain. Is it possible that pain can be your friend?  That may sound a little crazy because pain obviously hurts. Upon further examination, you will realize that pain can be an indication that something is not right in your body and that you should do something about it before it becomes tomorrow’s deterioration, arthritis, ulcer, heart attack or cancer.
People have been trained to mask pain and keep on going. Over the counter sales of pain killing medications such as aspirin, acetaminophen, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS) and many others run in the billions of dollars.

Temporary Help, Long term problem

Unfortunately, these temporary symptom relieving pills can make you feel better in the moment while setting the stage for more serious long term health problems down the road, especially if they keep you from addressing the cause of your pain.
Let’s start with a simple backache, hip pain or leg pain, for example. Many people who “feel” these symptoms for the first time may take one of these drugs to help them feel better in the moment, and then do this for years, never addressing the cause. Finally when the pain gets so severe that it causes a debilitating crisis, that individual may have accumulated deterioration and damage, which can affect their entire life.
What may start as a simple issue could become a more complicated condition that could have been prevented with early chiropractic intervention. What is worse is that the accumulated intake of these medications can lead to secondary health problems that are even more severe than the underlying cause of the pain.
Long term aspirin use, for example, has been linked to ulcers and blood clotting problems later in life. NSAIDS have been linked to kidney failure, and long term acetaminophen use has been linked to liver failure especially when combined with alcohol. These side effects are well-documented scientifically but unfortunately not well publicized.  Many people take these drugs like candy, as a part of their lifestyle, not realizing the long-term consequences of their actions.

  Your Body Usually Whispers Before It Yells

Your body was designed to be healthy and function normally throughout your lifetime without pain and without the need for painkilling medication. Your nervous system, the master control, communication and internet hub of your body, connects your brain to your skin, muscles, bones and every organ including your heart and lungs. At nearly three million messages per second your nervous system monitors your inner world and adapts you to your environment. It will send signals when things are not right; many times in the form of pain. Covering up these warning signals confuses your body and can lead to more severe conditions as you age.
Chiropractic care can be very effective for eliminating pain, while also helping your body regenerate and restore the function that can keep you healthy for a lifetime. Top athletes utilize chiropractic care as part of their training and their lifestyle. More importantly, they are proactive in their approach using imbalance as their reason to be checked instead of pain.
Next time you or a loved one experiences pain, don’t just cover it up. Get to the cause with a chiropractic check up. Better yet, be proactive.
