Dr. Bob Cummins Rowing the MM2X
As a rower, Dr. Bob Cummins knows how important it is to have an eye out for his teammates back. Working at Cummins Chiropractic & Wellness in Bellevue, he takes the same approach as he teams with his patients aiming for Gold Medal Health.

Nine athletes make up an eight oared racing shell in the highlight race of the Olympic rowing regatta. Seven rowers in a line all watching each other’s back.  Who can you trust to help push you forward to your goal? Who helps steer you to your very best?
We all need help. Alone we are nothing. We all need support physically, emotionally and spiritually.
Most of what we have accomplished in our lives was because people had our back. We are responsible for ourselves but we could not do it alone. When it comes to your health care, does your doctor or team of doctors have your back?
Do you trust that your health care providers will guide you in the right direction? Through this journey called health, are your doctors inspired to help you reach your health goals or do you feel they are just doing a job, going through the motions to get paid?
Here are a few characteristics of a doctor who truly has your back:

  • They stand for you being your best
  • They provide a healthy vision for the future
  • They empower you to make healthy choices
  • They educate and inform you
  • They are a source of information
  • They present your options
  • They care about your family

Does your current health care team possess these traits? You need two types of health care providers. One that helps in times of crisis and one that helps prevent a crisis from happening by optimizing the function of your mind and body.
As a 100 Year Lifestyle chiropractor, we help people who are in crisis, we help people make healthier choices that are good for you and your family and we will help get your body functioning to its full potential.  We have your back and more.
Thanks for trusting us as an essential member of your health care team.  If you have not yet come in for an evaluation, give our office the opportunity to serve your health care needs.
We’ve got your back to help steer you to gold medal health through the Rio Olympics and beyond!
Cummins Chiropractic & Wellness is proud to be a 100 Year Lifestyle Affiliate Clinic serving Bellevue and beyond with our best chiropractic care.  Our goal is to bring you to gold medal health so you can live vibrantly from your first breath of life to your last.

Lost Coverage. Found Health.

Contributed by fellow 100 Year Lifestyle Affiliate Dr. Dennis Buckley and 100 Year Lifestyle Founder Dr. Eric Plasker
Millions of people in the United States are paying higher premium costs or losing their insurance coverage all together. The focus for many concerned Americans  is, “Will I have insurance coverage in case I get sick or injured?” While the concern over coverage is important, this question ignores the basic fact that having coverage for sickness and being healthy are two completely different issues.
Do we want to have “insurance” to cover us? Sure. But even the best of coverage does not replace poor choices. The best insurance of all is to eat healthy quality food, keep yourself fit and at your ideal weight, reduce stress, have a positive attitude, and keep your structure, spine and nervous system healthy.
Just because you are “covered” doesn’t mean you are healthy. In fact, if you have “coverage” and make poor health choices, you are much

Eating well, thinking well, Moving well , and taking care of our spine and nervouse system are all essential peices of a well rounded health plan. We love Foley's Produce stand across from the Cedar River Trail head in Maple Valley. http://foleysproduce.com/

more likely to wind up sick, injured and suffering unnecessarily.
Don’t misunderstand – good coverage is a very good thing. Unfortunately, too many people are living unhealthy lifestyles and are headed down the sickness path. It’s time to change paths.
We are the first generation in history that is getting the advance notice that whether we like it or not, want to or not, we will probably live longer than we ever thought. According to the British Medical Journal, 50% of the babies born since the year 2000 are expected to live to 100. The important question is what will your quality of life be like along the way?
The US ranks 51st in life expectancy compared to other industrialized nations and 44th in infant mortality. 60% of the population is overweight and over 30% are obese.
Medical errors cause over 100,000 people to die each year unnecessarily, and we are watching the numbers of people with preventable illnesses such as diabetes, heart disease, cancer and autoimmune problems climb.
For a small number of those who suffer from a genetic problem, medical intervention can help save lives. Trauma from injuries and accidents may also be handled well by our current system, saving lives. But the vast majority of people that are seen by doctors have problems that can be directly correlated to unhealthy lifestyles; therefore, most likely preventable.
Too many people suffer through the last decades of their life because of poor choices along the way. Whether they have good coverage or not, every single one of those people who are suffering would choose being healthy and not needing the coverage over getting sick.
The 100 Year Lifestyle is about staying healthy throughout your entire lifetime. It’s about healthy choices including good nutrition and exercise, along with health care choices that are proactive including keeping your spine and nervous system well-adjusted with chiropractic Lifestyle Care.
Having insurance for the crisis care can be very valuable but not as valuable as the day to day choices you make to stay healthy.
Chiropractors are leading the way in communities around the world, teaching people how to live healthy and thrive rather than just survive. You owe it to yourself to discover your true value and potential and you hold the key to that potential in the decisions you make day to day. We will stand with you to help you on this journey.

Healthier Pregnancy, Healthier Life

New longevity research declares that babies born today could routinely live to 100-120 years and beyond. Parents need to know how their lifestyle will affect their baby today, tomorrow and for a lifetime.
It’s wise for pregnant moms to reduce and avoid stress, but why?  Stress affects longevity by shortening telomeres, the caps on chromosomes. They are considered the timekeepers of the cell and telomere shortening can happen at any age. When umbilical cord blood is drawn from newborns, the babies whose mothers experienced more stress during pregnancy showed shorter telomeres than those moms who experienced easier or less stressful pregnancies.1
If conditions during pregnancy were not ideal, then embracing a healthy lifestyle now with good nutrition, exercise and a balanced spine and nervous system are vital for mom and child, to preserve and optimize their longevity potential while also reducing the risk of degenerative diseases.
The science of epigenetics empowers us with the knowledge that we have greater control over our own and our baby’s destiny than we may have thought. Depending on the research you read, between 5 to 30% of disease development is determined by your genetics while 70% or more being related to your lifestyle choices, how we take care of ourselves today.  This is a game changer for making the extra effort to create the healthiest pregnancy, delivery and environment for mom and baby. A vitalistic, less stressful pre and post-natal phase can set the stage for health.
The old saying “you are what you eat” is especially true during pregnancy and quality prenatal supplementation plus eating nutritious whole food is important. Include protein sources rich in omega 3 fatty acids and free from hormones and antibiotics. Eliminate exposure to toxins, pesticides and estrogen mimickers commonly found in plastics, sunscreens, cleaning agents and insecticides. Pesticide exposure can be reduced swiftly by switching to organic foods.
Regular exercise like walking, swimming and stretching prepares the body well for labor. Building strength will prepare mom for the endurance needed during delivery and the weeks following birth.
The structure of the mom’s pelvis can determine her ability to carry and deliver her baby in a healthier way. Lifestyle chiropractic care can align her pelvis and contribute to a delivery with less stress on her and her baby. If mom’s pelvis and/or sacrum are misaligned, abnormal tension can occur in her nerve system leading to unnecessary complications such as breach or transverse presentation, back pain, sciatica or severe ‘back labor’.
Women receiving chiropractic adjustments report shorter labor times and better delivery experiences.  Offering the gift of a chiropractic checkup to an expectant mother can be the highlight gift at every baby shower. Proper spinal alignment before, during and after pregnancy sets the stage for mom and baby to live their ideal 100 Year Lifestyle.

If You Had 24 Hours to Live

anna Leave a Comment

What if you were told that you only had 24 hours left to live? Once the shock wore off you would urgently pursue, do and handle everything that was important to you in your life.
Would you prepare or acknowledge your most important relationships? Would you do something exciting like parachute from an airplane? Would you meditate or pray to make peace with your maker?
This is a common question that people ask themselves as they make decisions about how they want to live. Here’s another question that is equally important: What if the powers that be looked at you and said something like, “We made a mistake when we told you that you have 24 hours to live. You actually have 30 days.”?
You might approach this situation differently. You would still feel a sense of urgency but now you would make a longer list and start checking it off. You might take a trip, spend more time with your loved ones, or write your memoir.
What if you were given a decade or even better, an entire century? At some point you would realize that you need to find the balance between immediate gratification and planning for the long-haul. Your adventures would be enjoyed while at the same time you were preparing for the future by taking care of your mind, body and spine. If you didn’t, and you just went at life full speed ahead without a long-term vision in mind, then you might end up with some incredible stories while your body, bank and relationships become beaten and broken.

Don’t want to live to 100?

One of the most interesting things we hear people say when talking about the possibility of their extended lifespan is “they don’t want to live to 100”. But here’s an important point to consider: You may not have a choice. 100 year old people are the world’s fastest growing group and none of these people planned to live this long. If you have relatives in their 80s, 90s or over 100 years old, then the odds are that you will live at least that long or longer. What will your quality of life be like along the way?

Immediate gratification may feel good in the moment but will compromise your health as time goes on. Medications, for example, can mask the pain and cause damage to your heart, liver or kidneys. Be aware and careful not to wear yourself out with quick fix addictions that can slow you down and cause chronic conditions.

People start to feel old when they can no longer do the things that they love or used to be able to do and their suffering becomes chronic. Be proactive.

Find the balance between immediate gratification and taking care of your body and mind for the long-haul. Adjust your lifestyle. Eat healthier, exercise, get plenty of rest and take care of your spine and nervous system with Lifestyle Care.

You will enjoy the present more while you also enjoy a sensational century.

Why Stress Affects You Differently than Your Neighbor

anna Leave a Comment

Work. Traffic. In Laws.  Money.  Sugar.  Busy.  Baby. Wedding.  Practice. School.  Run.  Row.  Car alarm.
Do these words bring about the thought of stress to you?  Some of them may, but the list in and of itself is not stressful.  Stress is a response.  Stress is how your body responds to a stressor (like your work, sitting in traffic or a bag of candy.)  And the truth is, everyone responds to stress differently.  Even the parts of stress that are innate.
If a car alarm was going off on my street, my neighbor may choose to simply ignore the sound and pop in some earplugs and be back to reading their book.  I, on the other hand, may have just put down my kids for a nap and with the same sound of the car alarm the neighbor heard, my heart beat rises and I head out the front door to find out what is making all the racket. My neighbor isn’t stressed out by the car alarm, but I would be jumping out of my skin to keep the house quiet and the kids sleeping.  My stress reaction is unique to me and how my body and mind are functioning.
The 100 YearLifestyle has a great explanation that can be summed up like this:
Stress is a nerve system reaction that causes your heart to beat faster, your muscles to be tense, your stomach to tighten, and your hair follicles to stand up, all as a way to prepare your body for an emergency. When you interpret a situation as stressful, whether it truly is or not, your brain triggers this reaction by sending a signal over your spinal cord and nerve system to every cell of your body. In prehistoric times, this would have been the perfect reaction to escape from a hungry dinosaur, but in today’s stress filled world and no Tyrannosaurus Rex, this chronic reaction can cause pain, sickness and disease.
So, question is then, is your body pre-stressed?  Is there something in your body that is already putting pressure on your nerves so that you are already dealing with your body at sub-optimum levels?  Potentially.  This is why we recommend having a well spine check-up.  Our office specializes in recognizing the state of your nervous system.  By optimizing your nervous system and getting it in alignment and working at it’s best, your body should respond to all stressors better – car alarms  included.
