Pain Relief and Drug Concerns

anna Leave a Comment

The Food and Drug Administration has approved the powerful opioid narcotic painkiller OxyContin for children as young as 11. While we are compassionate for everyone in pain, especially children, we are also very concerned about how their pain is being addressed. Parents must become educated and cautious. Consider the following before introducing any pain reliever, especially a narcotic that has the potential to create long-term addiction and abuse.

  • Nearly two million Americans, aged 12 or older, either abused or were dependent on opioid painkillers in 2013.
  • “One in 25 high school seniors has abused OxyContin” said Scott Hadland, a specialist in adolescent medicine and substance abuse treatment at Boston Children’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School.
  • The number of prescription painkillers sold has quadrupled since 1999, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
  • More than 44,000 Americans die of drug overdoses each year. Some people who become addicted to prescription painkillers switch to using heroin, which has become cheaper and easier to access than OxyContin.
  • Every day, 44 people die as a result of prescription opioid overdose.
  • There were 43,982 drug overdose deaths in the United States alone in 2013. Of these, 22,767 (51.8%) were related to prescription drugs.
  • Drug misuse and abuse caused about 2.5 million emergency department (ED) visits in 2011. Of these, more than 1.4 million ED visits were related to prescription drugs.

We don’t want you or a loved one to become a statistic. If you are considering medication for yourself or for them and are looking for a healthier long term solution, keep in mind the holistic options available that help the body heal itself and function the way it’s supposed to.
Chiropractic care can get to the cause and relieve pain resulting from spine and nervous system imbalance. Research published in the January 2005 issue of the scientific periodical the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics, (JMPT) showed that patients with chronic spinal pain syndromes did markedly better under chiropractic care than patients who received medication.
Seeking chiropractic care as part of the journey to relief can result in improved conditions today and enhance your quality of life as you age.

Seahawks Bennett Leading the Nutrition Game

anna Leave a Comment

If you were an NFL super star, what would be one of the reasons you’d credit for being such a fantastic athlete?
While there is always your mom’s support and showing up early for practice, what could change the course of all of your skills and really get your game to jump to the next level?  For Seahawks’  star Michael Bennett , he credits his increase in attention to nutrition.
In a recent article in the Seattle Times by Bob Condotta, Bennett says “I noticed my game change when I really started taking my nutrition to the next level.  Ever since then I think it’s really changed my game.”
Bennett is good.  As in really good.  So good he signed a four-year, $28.5 million contract with the Seahawks in 2014 and last season was named the Defensive MVP of the Pro Bowl.
We think it is worth noting that he made gradual changes to his diet and mentioned he didn’t feel like he really honed in on his best nutrition practices till he was already in the NFL. This is super encouraging.  Little changes friends.  Little changes that we can make at any stage in our lives can make a big difference.  Maybe even be a game changer to make you the most valuable player in your life.
Let’s go get it team.  On the practice field today: as many greens as you can manage.  Spinach in your smoothie.  Salad option for lunch.  Broccoli on the side at dinner.  Kale chips for a snack.  Then, just watch the power fill you up from the inside.   By trading in greens (especially in place of the common American diet of simple sugars), your body will move closer to your health potential and you will be able to live your ideal 100 year lifestyle.
Our favorite part of the story to close out this blog:
“Throughout, Bennett extolled the benefits of healthy eating. At one point, he held up a bag of sugar he said matched that found in a popular ice tea. After asking if you can drink something like that and “pass like Russell Wilson or hit like Kam Chancellor” Bennett emphatically yelled no and threw the bag to the ground.”
Boom.  Let’s throw our sugar kicks to the ground and let our bodies express their full potential.

Attention Weekend Garden Warriors in Bellvue!

anna Leave a Comment

Watering the gardenIt’s the time of year when we hit the garden with a vengeance.  In our yard at home, we have a new vegetable garden – complete with a rock wall we put in ourselves…
It’s so tempting when we get our first sunny day or weekend to throw ourselves full tilt into getting the garden in order. Pulling weeds, spreading moss, building a rock wall, or getting the backyard vegetable garden planted. You’re proud of your hard work, but the back pain can set in the day after you’ve gardened.

Yard Work Without The Back Pain

Bending over or going on your hands and knees for hours can take a toll on your body and leave you with pain from head to toe. Because we’ve seen a lot of people come in with flare-ups of old injuries, we want to give you a few tips to prevent gardening injuries.

  1. Pace yourself. You don’t have to complete all your yard chores at once.
  2. Ask for help. It’s more fun to work in the yard when someone else can join you in enjoying the fresh air and sunshine.
  3. While you’re working, remember to do a quick stretch or two about every 10 minutes. Just 30 seconds or a minute of stretching can break up your static posture so that patterns of tension can’t set in.

We’re here for you when you need us, but hopefully you’ll be coming in from your yard work for your chiropractic appointment for a wellness visit instead of from a garden warrior crisis.  Either way, we’re here to help.

New Study: Chiropractic Lifestyle Care Helps Stop the Decline in Health with Age

anna Leave a Comment

In a new pilot study performed by the Life University Research Department, Dr. Eric Plasker and The Family Practice, the data suggests very promising results relating to quality of life and length of time under chiropractic care. Eleven clinics and more than 100 patients ranging from one to three years under care to more than 20 years under chiropractic care, show two trends worth noting.

The first trend is that people under chiropractic care during their first three years showed a definite improvement in their overall health even beyond their initial complaint. In patients under care from three years to more than 20 years, the second trend takes the form of a leveling off effect – indicating that there was no decline in health with age.

This is an important finding as many advocates for lifetime chiropractic care have described how chiropractic care as a part of their lifestyle contributes to their quality of life and activity level as they age. Staying healthy is more important than ever as we are learning that we have a greater longevity potential than our parents and grandparents.

In fact, 100-year-old people are the world’s fastest growing group and we are the first generation in history that is getting the advanced notice that whether we like it or not, we will probably live longer than we ever thought.

According to the New England Centenarian Study, “Health span equals lifespan…. Instead of the aging myth that the older you get, the sicker you get, it is much more the case of, the older you get, the healthier you’ve been”.1 Staying healthy is more important than ever to ensure your quality of life as you age so that your health span matches your lifespan.

Too many people are crisis oriented when it comes to their health. As the study suggests, if you want to be healthy, make the critical transition from chiropractic Crisis Care to Lifestyle Care and make the health of your spine and nervous system a priority.

The pilot study results are preliminary and require confirmation in a larger study that is in the works. We will keep you informed as to when the results of Phase Two are completed and ready for circulation.

Between now and then, make the transition with your family and make chiropractic Lifestyle Care your top priority.
