Opening Day Crew Races and Parade

Opening Day 2014 Boat Parade
Opening Day 2014 Boat Parade

Opening Day is this Saturday, May 2 and we hope you’ll join us to celebrate the beginning of boating season and to cheer on hundreds of rowers – including the Huskies and many of our patients going for gold medal health!
This FREE event sponsored by the Seattle Yacht Club and Windermere Real Estate and you can bring the whole family to enjoy. The crew races kick off at 10:20am with a new race starting every two minutes. The University of Washington is racing against New Zealand so join us in wearing your purple.  At noon, all the rowers paddle back through the Montlake Cut and the boat parade begins with the yachts decorated in the theme of “Myths & Monsters.”

Festivities for the Entire Family

This yearly event is certainly a family affair! Yacht owners get creative in decorating their boats for the festivities and parade, with residents spreading blankets on the shoreline and spending hours watching, cheering and picnicking. And let’s not forget all the wonderful photo ops! Here are some of the festivities planned:

  • A morning of crew races, featuring hundreds of rowers (Go DAWGS! and good luck to all our patients participating as well)
  • A sailboat race
  • A spectacular water parade that starts with the blast of a cannon and the raising of the Montlake Bridge
  • The UW marching band
  • Food vendors – Yum!

We will be bringing our family to take in the racing and hope to watch from the Stewards Enclosure at the finish line. We hope to see you there!  For more information, like where to park and an official schedule of events, visit http://windermerecup.withwre.com/

Let's Celebrate Mom!

anna Leave a Comment

Sunday, May 10, is Mother’s Day!

Time to honor Mom on May 10!

I want to encourage you all to remember your moms on this day and help them realize what an important part they play in your life. Mothers give so much and often put themselves last: I don’t think there’s a mom out there who wouldn’t appreciate a little pampering!

A Simple Gift with a Lot of Heart

One of the best ways to show your appreciation would be in the form of a gift certificate for a wellness massage. Here are some of the ways Mom can benefit from your gift:

  • Massage provides relief from anxiety, depression and anger and improves measures of vitality and the release of “feel good” hormones.
  • Massage increases feelings of calm, wellness, peace and relaxation and fosters a sense of belonging. This is a great time for Mom to reflect on the love of her family.
  • Massage helps people overcome feelings of fatigue.
  • Done on a regular basis, wellness massage helps tremendously with mood management.
  • Massage assists with many musculoskeletal issues and helps to decrease pain, improve range of motion, boost immunity and increase circulation.

Call the office or email us and we’ll be happy to put together a wellness massage package for that special mom in your life!

Healthy Kids Day Is a Blast!

The fun way to learn about health!

We’d like to invite you to celebrate Healthy Kids Day at the Coal Creek Family YMCA in Newcastle on Saturday, April 25, from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. This is a free event and is designed to educate parents and children on the value of healthy habits, while having tons of fun!
The first 100 kids through the door will be eligible for a free Healthy Kids Day T-shirt, and there’ll be opportunities as well for facility tours and summer camp sign-ups. Healthy snacks will also be featured!
Here are some of the other activities planned:
• A visit from a Seattle Seahawk (bring your camera!)
• A bounce house
• Carnival games and live musical performances
• A climbing tower
• Pool activities and play time in the gym
• Obstacle courses
• Bike helmet fitting

Stop by Our Spinal Screening Booth

We love being a part of this community event, and we hope you’ll stop by our booth for a free spinal screening for your friends, kids, spouse or significant other. Here are some of the benefits of our painless testing:
• The screening itself is noninvasive and can provide incredible insight into the participant’s state of health
• It’s invaluable for the early detection of scoliosis in children
• It’s an engaging and fun way to learn about wellness, the importance of nervous system health and the benefits of chiropractic care
• A good spinal analysis at the right time can literally unlock the door to improved health and well-being!
We look forward to seeing you and your children this Saturday at the Coal Creek Family YMCA!

Essential Tools to Regain Fitness: Endurance

anna Leave a Comment

Have you found your body is a bit out of shape after winter and not quite ready to run or walk the Bellevue 5k All in for Autism race?  Want to get back to feeling your best with some exercise so you can join our team for the event?
Often times the first step we see patients take when getting back in shape is to work on their endurance.  Running, walking, rowing, hiking, biking or any number of great endurance activities are popular around Bellevue.
Adding in exercise that increases cardiovascular capacity is an essential piece of fitness, but  we want to help our Bellevue community  get back in shape without pain or injury. That said, here are some fun tools to effectively work into your endurance workouts.

endurance rowing

Endurance Tools

Long Day: Do any cardio activity at a moderate pace to increase your endurance.  Having a long endurance day in your plan will push your body past it’s original max.
Speed Day: Be sure to work in some speed into your workouts at least once a week. Speed doesn’t have to be an all out effort. Speed can be in the form of simply pushing faster than your normal pace for a short time and then resting, repeating a few times through.  If you are a walker, try to walk fast during one block and then walk moderate the next.  Do this for 6-10 blocks and you have added in a speed component.
Tempo workout: Workout at a steady, moderately hard intensity for the entire session. Your goal is to increase the amount of time you can move fast. For a walker, you can start off with a 5 minute walk to get going and then walk fast for 20 minutes (the Tempo part).  Finish off with 5 minutes more of a cool down walk.
Change it up: Be sure to add in an exercise that is different than your norm at least once a week.  If you are a runner, try hiking, the elliptical, stair climbing, swimming or hopping on the bike.

Rest: Don’t forget the power of the recovery. Be sure to include a rest day to your workouts and to aim for 7-9 hours of sleep each night.

A Piece of True Health

Endurance is an essential piece of health and putting time in to increase your body’s capacity to move is well worth it.  Just remember, fitNESS!  This principle from The 100 Year Lifestyle maps out that for whole body health, we need not just to get in our endurance, but to incorporate proper Nutrition, Endurance, Strength and Structure.  Skipping a piece of this all around fitness plan may leave your body out of balance and ready to break down – just when you are trying to build it up!
For help when your body does break down, chiropractic may be just what you need.  Give us a call and Dr. Cummins can see how to best help you move past your injuries and pains to meet your fitness goals.

run5 Reasons to Run the Bellevue 5k/10k Road Race

Looking for something fun to do on Sunday, April 26th?  Join us in running or walking the Bellevue All in For Autism 5k/10k or Kids Run. Here are five ways to benefit:

  1. Motivation Needing something to get you excited to get off the couch and outside into our stormy Spring Seattle weather?  By signing up to run, you are committing to something that will make you want to get your workouts in before the big race day.  Why? Because if you don’t start training today, the race might be painful.  You will have much more fun if you sign-up today and get in a few days of running or walking before the start on the 26th.
  2. Community Dr. Cummins, his wife, Anna, and their three kids will be there and want you to join in.  Getting exercise is so much more enjoyable with a team, so be sure to select the “Cummins Chiropractic” team when you register.
  3. Get a T-Shirt They have great shirts for this event and you can enjoy your hard run/walked efforts for years to come when you take home your cool new T!
  4. Built in Post Race Recovery If you run with Dr. Cummins, maybe he will bring his adjusting table and help work out your muscle tightness post race?  Tell him you registered and that if he will be too tired, he should bring one of our awesome massage therapists to be at the Bellevue Park post race ready to relieve any aches and pains.
  5. Bragging Rights Pride can be a great motivator… how about being able to say you beat an Olympic champion (Anna) or a World Champion (Dr. Cummins)?  We’ll be giving it our all, but we do think you may have the upper hand if you have been running already.  We’ll be pushing our kids in the baby joggers!

You in? We’re all in for this one.  See you at Bellevue Park! Get 10% Registrations before April 23rd by using code UWA10 thanks to the generosity of Uwajimaya Bellevue.  Register at bellevuerun.com  Sunday, April 26th, 2015.  Bellevue Downtown Park. 8am – Escape Outdoors 10k Run 8:30am- The Y Family 5k Run/Walk 9:30am – Seattle Children’s Kid’s Dash

Bellevue Weekend Yard Warriors – Let's put seeds in without pulling our backs out!

Dr. Cummins’ Top 3 Tips to Keep You Healthy and Your Garden Sharp

yard work injury flowersBellevue – What fun it is to plant our gardens and create something that will bring satisfaction all season long, as long as we don’t get injured in the process.  Yes, injured from the garden. It doesn’t look like it could get you at first, but we here at Cummins Chiropractic & Wellness care for many injures from Weekend Yard Warriors this time of year.
All winter long, the lawn and trees have been saving up for Spring’s big growth.  As we are enjoying longer Seattle days of partial sun (hey, we’ll take it), most people head out to get their yards in good looking order before we invite friends over for a BBQ.  Feeling up for the task of the yard work at hand, out to the yard we go!

Here are the top 3 problems and solutions to keep your yard injuries at bay:

Problem #1: A New LONG Workout:
5 hours straight of yard work is different than most Weekend Yard Warriors regular workouts.  Most of the injuries we see, not surprisingly, are from Weekend Yard Warriors that are in quite good shape.  They workout at the Coal Creek YMCA or Crossfit Bellevue or do long walks through the Bellevue Botanical Garden to gain inspiration.  Yes, you may be in good health and in good shape, but is your body ready for the duration of a big day in the garden?

  • Tip #1: Take breaks and try to break up large yard projects over multiple days if possible.  Remember to take your water breaks once an hour.  During your work, every 10 minutes, take a quick rest and do an opposite movement for 1 minute.  For example, if you are looking down pulling weeds, take a stretch and look up and back for a few stretches between dandelions.

Problem #2: NOT a Yard Specialist:
Unless you own and operate Bellevue’s best landscaping business and are in super good shape specific to your yard, then when an Average Joe takes on a specialized yard task like, pulling vines for three hours or wheel barrowing dirt for 4 hours, one’s body is going to pipe up and say, “Hey, what’s with the new movement? I’m good for a bit but at hour number two, I’m going to give you tendinitis or a pulled muscle!”

  • Tip#2: When taking on a yard task, especially if specialized, include proper form.  Be mindful to bend at the knees and bend at the hips. Avoid rounding the back or straining the neck.  By setting your body up to do the yard work in the proper position, you will be minimizing stress on the smaller and less capable muscles, ligaments, and bones.  A great example of this would be to bend your knees to pick up the wheel barrow instead of rounding and lifting with your back.  Lifting with a rounded low back will fatigue the supporting muscles and could strain these muscles, the underlying ligaments that connect the spine, or the injure the disks with such a load.  Also, take note of Tip #1 (quick review, take breaks!).

Problem #3: Turning Off your Ears:
We all know to “listen to your body”.  However, the final problem that seems to get our Weekend Yard Warriors is when they turn off their ears and tune out their body communicating subtle signals of pain and discomfort.  These subtle signals of pain are the body’s way of saying, “You may be able to do this right now, but something’s not quite right and a bigger pain signal may come if you push it!”.

  • Tip#3: Listen to your body.  Be aware of how your body is feeling and try to note if you are getting sore or hurt before it becomes a terrible problem.  Be aware of the pressure you put on yourself to get a project done by a certain time (Mow the lawn before your mother-in-law arrives for brunch) and of the pressure to keep up with the Jones’ (Needing to get the beauty bark out of the driveway before the Somerset Neighbors give you an ‘eye’ for taking ‘too’ long).  Your health is more important than your yard.

Hope these tips help keep healthy during your Weekend Yard Warrior tasks.  If you do happen to have an injury (wake up with low back pain, a headache that doesn’t go away, or a back and/or neck muscle that won’t let go), do give us a call and Dr. Cummins will see if chiropractic can help and if not, will point you in the right direction for relief.
